Disabling Splash Screen Ubuntu
2During startup, any administration knows that this is where you need to be aware of the things going on with your system. But out of the box, Ubuntu comes ready to suppress the errors and display a nice splash screen.
To get around this and get your information back you want to run:
sudo joe /boot/grub/menu.lst
and locate the below:
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=UUID=ed59a33a-69bf-4a01-af11-be65b87b4286 ro quiet splash xforcevesa
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic
quiet
You just want to remove quiet splash so it reads:
title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=UUID=ed59a33a-69bf-4a01-af11-be65b87b4286 ro xforcevesa
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic
quiet
Obviously you’ll want to do this for the appropriate kernel title that you are using, as of the date of this posting it was 2.6.24-19.
Forcing Filesystem Check Ubuntu
0So tonight my long download finally completed, and I had about 36 updates that were pending to go through, so naturally I just tried to do an apt-get update/upgrade, and wouldn’t you know about half way through the process, I got a failure to commit data to disk. And during restart I got an error that the disk was dirty.
Of all the things! So what I recommend people do, when you manually shutdown the machine, force the machine to fsck! Run the following from terminal:
sudo touch /forcefsck
This will place an empty file in / called forcefsk and restart your computer normally. This will force the system to fsck the disk during startup.
Are ghosts real? Or are they made possible through a slight of physics?
0I’ve been watching shows like The Dresden Files (which by the way was an AWESOME show on Scifi–too bad they cancelled it!), Ghost Whisperer, Sliders, and a host of other shows, and it dawned on me that we think of things in terms of what we understand–is it true that we can sense and feel things that are other worldy? Can the dead really be able to visit us on this plane of existence, via some metaphysical form, like the Slimer from Ghostbusters or some whispy ghostly manifestation?
After watching Sliders (actually that’s not true, I’m still waiting it and only through season 2), but the concept that is behind the show, being able to go between the EPR plane and literally slide between parallel dimensions, struck me as strange but at the same time kind of thought provoking. What if, at the present moment we can’t slide between dimensions, but what if there are tiny holes that can exist between dimensions, weak spots if you will, and it is in those intersection points that we find it possible to “view” individuals from one dimension to another. What if, the reason some people can “talk” to those who have pasted, is that in this particular house at this particular location at this particular time and space, the tear has allowed for a window into a dimension where that individual is very much alive? Is it so fantastic to think that this is possible? Wouldn’t that go volumes to try and explain much of what we see around us that we don’t know, but on the other side, is rather terrifying in the idea that there can be tears between dimensions or time and space for that matter. We think of time and space in a more fluid or undistrubed plane of existence, but what if that plane is rifed with pot-holes or various other dimples that cause discontinuity between what we would consider to be normal and what is not normal.
Active Desktop Recovery Error Windows XP
2So I have a M4300 Dell Precision laptop for work, and wouldn’t you know that the left side of the screen started to go dim, then at the beginning of this week, the whole screen went dim! Fortunately for Dell business support, they had the part ordered and a Dell tech at my front door within 24 hours to fix. Everything went through smoothly until we started the machine backup and wouldn’t you know, my desktop had been replaced by a bright white background with the dreaded:
Active Desktop Recovery
That gives me a bunch of errors when I try and recover my Active desktop. So after a quick search online, I figured out the fix here. If you are using IE7, I would suggest that you try Option 1. If not and you are using IE6, try Option 2.
Option 1
The first option is to go to Start > Run > Type “regedit” and Hit Enter. Traverse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components
and locate: DeskHtmlVersion. It should currently be set to 272. Right click on this and go to Modify and change the radio button from Hex to Decimal. The field should change to 272. Delete 272 and replace it with just 0 and save. Refresh your desktop and you should have your previous screen!
Option 2
Go into your Control Panel > Folder options and have it show all files (including hidden). Then do a search on your C drive for Desktop.htt. Delete all instances of this file and restart your system.
Review of Dogswell Treats
14
If you knew our Shiba Inu, you would know that he is ONE PICKY eater! So we have him on a high protein diet with Innova Evo dog food, but in terms of treats, we have so far been using just the Innova Health Bars, which Momo just absolutely loves.
So at the most recent Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue, we got a sample of a dog treat made by Dogswell. Now frankly I haven’t heard of these treats before, but let me tell you, Momo LOVES THESE treats!
But if you look at the package, it will tell you that these treats are made in China. Now this is one of the reasons that we went with Innova dog food (wet and dry) because of the recall of dog food that was manufactured in China and contained certain amounts of melamine.
So out of concern, I sent an email to Dogswell to inquire:
Are your products made in China? If so, what are you doing to protect against the recent problems with Dog Food out of China?
That was at Sent: Monday, August 18, 2008 5:20 PM, now wouldn’t you know that we went out for dinner and came back and I received an email back from the company, a little over 2 hours for a response, now that’s service!
Below is what they responded back–let’s just say it raises my confidence level quite a bit on their product that this company is so honest and upfront, it’s hard to find companies like that these days. So I’d recommend that you try out their line of products as your dog will absolutely LOVE THEM! And feel safe that you have a company like this backing you up!
At DOGSWELL(r), your pet’s safety, health and well-being are our top priority, and that is why we continue to take every measure to ensure that all our ingredients are high quality and safe.
We have thoroughly tested our treats and food by an independent, third-party U.S. laboratory that uses APPMA- and FDA-approved methodology. We have NEVER been affected by any recalls.
All DOGSWELL(r) products have tested NEGATIVE for contaminants, including, melamine, salmonella and pesticides. In addition, DOGSWELL(r) products do not contain rice protein concentrate or wheat gluten.
We regularly test our products for any harmful contaminants and to ensure that they meet our quality standards. Along with an in-depth knowledge of our supply chain, our regular tests assure our customers that we are providing their pets with only the very best ingredients. Tests are conducted at independent, third-party, U.S. laboratories that follow FDA and APPMA-approved methodology. Please see below for an example of test results for our treats.
Our material suppliers are certified clean and clear of any contaminants. If raw ingredients do not meet their specifications and pass safety tests, then the ingredient is rejected immediately and never enters our processing facilities. Moreover, we strive to use products from suppliers that treat their animals humanely. Please see below for images of our chickens and ducks.
The DOGSWELL(r) manufacturing facilities meet the highest and most strict sanitary conditions. All of our plants have HACCP programs, have received high scores by independent Third Party auditors, have strict raw ingredient standards and continuously check our products during processing and when they are finished to ensure they meet our high quality standards. Our wet food for dogs is manufactured in the U.S. and our treats are manufactured in China. We regularly visit our manufacturing facilities to ensure the quality and safety of our products.
We know that it is easy to become concerned as the media is emphasizing safety issues in Chinese products. We share your concern. We look forward to the day when all factories in the United States are met with the same level of scrutiny we have put our suppliers through. Our factory is one of the cleanest, not only in China, but by American standards as well. Moreover, our product is the cleanest on the market. Assuming we could find a reliable source domestically, it would be impossible to find the same healthy, cage-free, antibiotic free, and hormone free product at the current price point.
We have USDA permits, and we have permits in every state in the U.S. In addition to the permits, the department of the USDA known as APHIS specifically monitors pet treats and conducts random inspections.
We stand behind our products 100% and feed them to our own dogs and cats.

SNMP Error in Cacti with Windows Vista Device
0So after coming back from holiday’s the only box that was on my network was my Linux router/server/firewall. In powering up all the other Windows machines two of them came back online ok and started reporting graphs, but my main Windows box didn’t. The error when I went into Cacti Admin > Console > Devices > The Device was: SNMP Error right under the upper left corner of the window under SNMP Information.
The first thing that I went to check was under Control Panels > Administrative Tools > Services and verified that the SNMP Service and SNMP Trap were both set to automatically start, and are both running. I went in to check the configuration of the SNMP service and the IP address that it was set to report to is correct and the community is fine.
So to break through all the walls here, the first test that you should run is:
snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx system
Replace the XXX’s with the actual internal IP address. Now what’s interesting for me is that my main box has two NIC’s on it; 192.168.1.8 and 192.168.1.20. When I ran the test against the first IP address, I received the below error:
george@otani:~$ snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.8 system
Timeout: No Response from 192.168.1.8
But when I ran it against the 192.168.1.20 IP, I received a response:
george@otani:~$ snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.20 system
sysDescr.0 = STRING: Hardware: x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11 AT/AT COMPATIBLE – Software: Windows Version 6.0 (Build 6001 Multiprocessor Free)
sysObjectID.0 = OID: enterprises.311.1.1.3.1.1
sysUpTimeInstance = Timeticks: (216315) 0:36:03.15
sysContact.0 = STRING:
sysName.0 = STRING: COMPUTERNAME
sysLocation.0 = STRING:
sysServices.0 = INTEGER: 76
This boils down to a firewall or some sort of block that is causing this error. If you don’t have two NIC’s, start with troubleshooting it at the local firewall level or at your router level. But changing the device IP from 192.168.1.8 to 192.168.1.20, I received the following within Cacti:
GEORGE-INTEL-DESKTOP (192.168.1.20) SNMP Information
System: Hardware: x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11 AT/AT COMPATIBLE – Software: Windows Version 6.0 (Build 6001 Multiprocessor Free)

For all you MMO fans, look no further! We all suffered a terrible loss at the grand platform that Age of Conan had promised, but in terms of a more mature level of MMO gameplay, Bloodymare seems to have fit the bill.
I haven’t gotten that far into the game, but leveling appears to be quite easy. I actually think that the game isn’t very quest based, as the initial quests seem very simple, but when you get out to the world and start fighting the creatures, it becomes very very apparent what the game is all about. Great graphics, and intuitive gameplay, this is definitely one that any MMO fan should try out!
The only downside that I can see so far is the fact that the game install file is like 2.5GB in size! But getting past that, you’ll love the game, I know I certainly have gotten into it!
